Hi again!
To get me right: I am not the one who wants mSQL crowded by useless
or too many features. I like it for its speed either.
But there are few things that could be helpful. I suggested some of them
as my personal wishes.
Bambi: You wanted to know what selecting just the length of textfields
could be useful for. One can use it to compile nice statistics about the
database, like in case of a web forum: '42 entries with total 50KB of text'.
Something about locking and transactions: I don't think that these kind
of things should be in a 2.x series. I think most people like mSQL not
just because of its speed and size but also because of its ease to use.
(Honestly: perl's msqlperl is easier to use than DBI::msql).
What I would like is some help for applications to synchronize themself
outside the database. I have nothing special in mind because I don't know
something good. It's just a vague idea... A little table-semaphore
perhaps :) But that is not really important... don't waste thoughts on
it. If I have real-life problem and a good idea i'll be here again :-)
About the monthly update: I would appreciate a Makefile target to
simplify the update... like: shut down the old database, safe the old
directory, install the new database, copy the databases and launch the
new database. Possibly skip first and last step because it's too
different on different machines...
... and speaking about starting/stopping the database engine. A
System-V-style initscript could be part of the distribution. If started
with 'start' as the 1. parameter it launches the deamon into the
background and stops it if called with 'stop'.
Anyway... hope you don't mind the suggestions...
