When we went from 1.0 to 2.0 there was a lot of comment like yours.
People being concerned that the performance for "simple stuff" would
degrade due to the added features etc.
Let me make everyone happy and assure you that the primary goal of the 2.1
development is similar to that of the 2.0 development - make the code more
useful for real applications without reducing the performance. Simple
queries must execute as quickly as they did in 2.0. Complex queries must
execute faster than in 2.0.
For anyone who rides bikes, we're working to the R1 concept - make the
smallest, fastest, most capable package possible. With 2.1 it's a matter
of bolting "go-fast" modules and extra features onto the base 2.0 code.
When we go to 3.0 it will be a total rewrite based on all the experience
we now have in making fast database.
