The only thing that should change would be the path to the sendmail
binary. My example was FreeBSD based as that's what we run on most
machines here (including my notebook).

Sounds like it's doing a full DNS resolution for the MX etc during
submission (and your DNS may be timing out and falling back to a
secondary). I'm not sure if it will help but try adding a -U to the
command line.
Another option is to include multiple recipients in the one message. If
you want to hide the recipients you could specify them using Bcc:
