nope, /local/www/cgi-bin is the one and only location, where a cgi-bin
directory has to be... ;-)))
Of course you are right. I thought of only copying the w3-* executables to
/usr/local/Hughes/bin, but that's of no use for a webserver living in some
other directory of the machine...
