Perl is a great scripting language, but even I have to grab a copy of "the
camel" even to read a text file. If you don't use it often then you
forget all the unusual syntax real fast. Don't get me wrong, I think perl
is great, but it can be hard to learn if you want to do something fast.
Also, it doesn't provide the embedded functionality of w3-msql and has a
much larger memory footprint.
It's horses for courses. It's nice to have a choice in life.

No you can't do that at the moment but we are certainly working on new
features for the backend. Stay tuned for info on the 2.1 code releases.
