Message-Id: <19970120214859.23533.qmail@oneida.internet.com> Subject: [mSQL] indeces: advantages of combined? Date: Mon, 20 Jan 1997 16:48:59 -0500 (EST) From: reichert@internet.com (Brian Reichert)Howdy, folks-
I'm mucking with mSQL 2.0.b3, and was curious about the finer points of
indices.
- I've lost track of any FAQ for mSQL, even unofficial. Any pointers?
- Do you need to create an index when you create the table, or can I
do it later?
- If you can create an index at any time, does the server then take
time to generate a full index of the specified column at that
time?
- The examples in the manual suggest making a compound index. If
I have two or more columns I wish to have indexed, how is a
compound index more helpful than a single index?
- A converse question: when would it be disadvantageous to combine
all of my non-unique indices into a single compound index?
- Is it practical to combine all of my unique indices into a compound
index, or does that require that values across my N columns be
unique?
- Other than in the selective dropping of an index, does the _name_
of the index matter?
- An aside question about sequences: is dropping, then re-creating
a sequence the approved-of way to reset the sequence?
Thanks for your time, whomever wants to cope with these questions...
